When you first sniffed my hand, My heart melted, When I put your first collar on, You trembled, When you learned your name, We celebrated, When you greeted visitors, They smiled. *** Whenever you sniffed my hand, My world brightened, When I'd put your lead on, You'd get excited, When you learned a new trick, We'd celebrate, When you would show visitors, They'd praise. *** When you last sniffed my hand, My heart sank, When I took your collar off, I cried, As you forgot your name, I hugged you, When we said goodbye, You slept. *** Now you don't sniff my hand, But I remember, Now I don't put your lead on, You roam free, I'll never forget your name, I'll remember, Though we've said goodbye, Like a Shadow, You are always with me.
