Rainy country road beside illuminated inn, vacancy, and café signs

Brother of Jolene – Poem by the Pesky Poet

Don’t get me wrong,
Jolene is fine,
And I know my vows
Say you are mine,
But someone else
Lives within my mind.
***
She's isn't trying to hurt you now,
Dolly, she's trying to save you,
From the lie I’ve made you live in.
***
When we were young,
And called it love,
It wasn't you,
I was thinking of,
Someone else already,
Had my heart.
***
In this small town it wasn't allowed,
Boys married girls and made folks proud,
So I became the man they said I ought.
***
The fishing trips,
With Jolene's brother,
She really wasn't,
With us there,
I never lied to you,
About Jolene.
***
That day you thought I was in the shower,
And opened the door to Jolene's brother,
I was there behind the bathroom door.
***
You see, Dolly,
It wasn’t you,
There was nothing,
You could ever do,
My heart was his,
Before I married you,
